WhatsApp is a free downloadable messaging/chat application that has been owned by Facebook (Facebook Inc.) since 2014. WhatsApp was founded on February 24, 2009, by Brian Acton and Jan Koum, former employees of Yahoo!. The operator of WhatsApp is WhatsApp Inc., which is headquartered in Mountain View, California. In 2014, Facebook acquired WhatsApp Inc. for approximately 19 billion dollars. With WhatsApp, users can send text and voice messages, make calls, and share images, documents, and other media files. The application is available on mobile devices, but it can also be accessed on desktop computers as long as the mobile device is connected to the internet. A phone number is required to register and use the application.
